September 25: Kinky Friedman, Singer, Songwriter, Gubernatorial candidate in Texas

Sometimes outrageous, but always outrageously funny, Kinky Friedman is a Texan version of a modern Renaissance man. This musician and detective novelist is the co-founder of the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, whose mission is to save stray, abandoned and aging animals. His experience as the Independent Spirit candidate in the Texas gubernatorial race of 2006 led him to write You Can Lead a Politician to Water, But You Can't Make 'Em Think.

October 23: Christopher Buckley, Social and Political Satirist, Editor of Forbes Magazine

Called the"quintessential political novelist of his time" by Fortune Magazine, Christopher Buckley is the winner of the ninth annual Thurber Prize for American humor. Buckley is the author of Thank You for Smoking, which was developed into a major motion picture. His most recent best seller is Boomsday, a satirical look at social security reforms. Marked by a savvy understanding of the truth behind the headlines and a perceptive wit that holds no target sacred, Buckley delivers a comedic look at national politics and world affairs.

November 13: Michael S. Brown, M.D. Nobel Prize Winner, Cheltenham HS Graduate

Why Hearts Attack! Dr. Brown and his colleague, Dr. Joseph Goldstein, discovered the genetic and molecular basis for high cholesterol in the blood. For this groundbreaking achievement they won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1985. Their findings led to the development of the current cholesterol-lowering drugs, which are the most widely prescribed medications in the U.S. Dr. Brown will discuss the roles that obesity and diabetes play in heart disease. He believes that we have the tools to prevent almost all heart attacks, but asks whether we have the will.

March 25: Ishmael Beah, Former Boy Soldier, Human Rights Activist, Best Selling Author

Ishmael Beah was born in Sierra Leone.  At the age of thirteen, he was forcibly recruited  to fight as a child soldier and became a killer. In his best selling  memoir, A Long way Gone, Beah, now twenty-six, tells his harrowing story. After fighting for over two years, eventually being rescued by UNICEF and attending its rehabilitation center, Beah  painfully struggled to regain his humanity.  His advocacy work has brought international attention to the issue of child soldiering and all war-affected children.  His life is a remarkable story of redemption and hope.

April 15:  Brian Tierney, Publisher and CEO Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News

During a time when newspapers are shrinking and relevancy and survival are key issues, Brian Tierney is a man with a mission. His leadership marks the first time since 1969 that the Philadelphia newspapers are under private ownership. A nationally recognized expert in branding and advertising, Mr. Tierney has developed marketing strategies for IBM, the Disney Company and Marriott Hotels, to name just a few. With his unique background, he will have a profound impact on our city's papers. Hear firsthand Mr. Tierney's vision of the power of print.
