BASIC FLORAL DESIGN If you enjoy flowers and want to learn the art of floral arranging for fun this is the class for you. This eight-week course with take-home arrangements will teach you important basic skills. We cover everything from bow-making, vase arrangements, corsage and boutonnieres, wreath construction and much more. Please bring a pair of floral shears to class. ADVANCED FLORAL DESIGN Fun with flowers continued. This class is for those who already make arrangements of fresh flowers from gardens or purchased from stores. You will explore the next level of your creativity with unusual styles and new and unconventional techniques. You will create topiaries, styled and exotic arrangements and much more. You will have the opportunity to bring from home your favorite containers and vases that you have always wanted to use. All you will need are your own shears and $10 per week for fresh flowers. Prerequisite: Basic Floral Design or equivalent.

BASIC GARDENING PART 1 Learn about the science and art of gardening. We’ll examine soil types, discuss soil testing, mulches, fertilizers and soil pH, and evaluate locations for plants, trees and shrubs. Key terms in garden design - focal point, structure, flow, color, texture and repetition – will be covered. Come with pictures of your garden problem areas and we’ll discuss these in class as well. BASIC GARDENING PART II Get your hands dirty! We will look at the differences between annuals and perennials, as well as discuss the uses of herbs and vegetables to enhance your plantings. We will learn how to plant, water and fertilize garden plants. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will be discussed. Come with pictures of your problem areas and we’ll discuss these in class as well. SPRING PERENNIALS Open this gardening season with some new ideas for plants that bloom throughout the spring. We’ll discuss different varieties of early blooming perennials, the sites they prefer, how to plant them for best effect and sources for finding them in the local area. We’ll also learn how to cut back winter-killed foliage so that your existing perennials will be ready to thrive another season. You will receive plant lists and other handouts. GROWING AND USING HERBS The many wonderful qualities of herbs are being rediscovered and everyone is looking for information on them. This class will teach you how to grow herbs in our humid climate, how to harvest and store them, and basic ways to incorporate them into your life. Each class will cover an aspect of herbalism and one herb will be highlighted. Two classes will be hands-on workshops. In one, you will make an herbal body scrub and bath salts; in the other, herbal blends and a vinegar. Handouts will be provided and other resources discussed. From the early stages of the development of civilization, wood has played an essential role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life of humankind. With an emphasis on the history of forest management and its influence on the growth of Pennsylvania, this course will focus on the source of wood, the forest, and the current trends in developing healthy and hardy forest ecosystems. Included will be a close examination of the classification of woods, wood structure, and the characteristics of the extraordinary number of species of the world’s woods and their uses, including engineered wood products. NAME THAT TREE Did you ever wish you could tell an oak from a maple, a beech from a birch? Spend a beautiful day at Morris Arboretum learning to identify twenty native trees by examining their leaves, buds, flowers, fruits and bark. The well-landscaped grounds have an impressive collection of trees and shrubs to enjoy as we go about our objective. We will be offered an especially colorful treat since our class coincides with the peak magnolia season. Fairmount Park in the Wissahickon Valley is home to scores of bird species native to this area, as well as a stopping place for dozens of migratory species. Our scenic walk along flat terrain adjacent to the Wissahickon Creek is approximately five miles and is expected to last about three hours. Highlights at this time of year will include spring warblers and flycatchers and emerging butterflies. Bring binoculars and field guides if you have them. Parking is along Northwestern Avenue just west of the intersection. NOTE: Rain date is Sunday, May 18. Roses flourish everywhere throughout this fourteen acre Dresher farm. As our hostess escorts us among scores of these beautiful perennials, we learn about the cultivation and care of the world’s most finicky plant. Currently, this rose enthusiast is focusing on growing the most recent “care free” varieties, and she will share her knowledge of how to maintain a healthy, colorful rose garden with a minimum of work.
