LANGUAGES
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL I, II, III) Beginning students (Level I) will learn basic survival English, concentrating on correct pronunciation, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Advanced students (Level II) will improve their reading and writing skills and work on grammar and conversation. NOTE: All students must register at Cheltenham High School on Thursday, February 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in order to establish appropriate placement. ITALIAN I Planning a trip to Italy? Want to learn Italian? This course is for you! No prior knowledge is required. SPANISH I Have you wanted to travel to a Spanish-speaking country? Have you noticed that Hispanic culture and language are quickly becoming prevalent in our society? This beginning course will introduce you to Spanish with special emphasis on vocabulary, introductory grammar and conversation. It is intended for students who have little or no prior knowledge of the Spanish language. The course book will be announced at the first class and available at Barnes and Noble. SPANISH II B If you have taken Spanish II or if you are familiar with the present and past tenses and are somewhat conversant in Spanish, you will enjoy participating in Spanish II B. The course is designed to augment your competency by reading and discussing selected literary works in Spanish and by studying grammatical structures not previously covered. The literary selections will be chosen to conform with the ability of the students to read and speak Spanish. The text will be announced at the first class and available at Barnes and Noble. FRENCH I Whether you’ve forgotten everything you’ve learned in high school/college French or you are new to the language, you can learn in a fun and relaxed environment. Begin to build vocabulary and to understand grammar through the use of illustrations and dialogue, such as describing what you do, discussing your travel plans, food and culture. FRENCH II This is a course for those who have completed level one and feel comfortable with simple conversations. We will use handouts from a variety of sources to fortify grammar and vocabulary. These activities will springboard into conversation. We will use games, songs and hands-on activities. Come and expand what you know. Practice using what you once learned. Various ability levels can benefit from this course. CHINESE This course is intended for people with little or no knowledge of Chinese. You will learn the fundamentals of Mandarin – basic vocabulary, conversation, simplified Chinese characters, as well as Chinese customs and culture. HSIAO-LING HUNG – Ph.D; Teacher; Native Speaker 131 - $78
KOREAN FOR BEGINNERS Learn to read and speak Korean in just ten weeks. Korean is a phonics-oriented language that is surprisingly easy to learn. The basic Korean alphabet has only 14 consonants and 11 vowels. After a few classes, you will be able to read and understand a great deal of the writing in our area’s Korean markets. In the later class sessions you will expand your vocabulary with an emphasis placed on conversation. Korean heritage and culture will also be discussed. SIGN LANGUAGE This introductory course in American Sign Language systems includes signed English American Sign Language and finger spelling. You will have the opportunity to practice both expressive and receptive sign language skills. The cost of materials is about $40 for text book and videotapes, payable to the instructor the first night of class.
