ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - CTAS no longer offers English as a Second
Language Classes.
ESL TUTORING AT THE ELKINS PARK FREE LIBRARY
The YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity's Education and Technology Center is offering
one-on-one English tutoring at the Elkins Park Library for speakers of English as a second
language.
Please contact Susie Baldauf to learn about participation in this program at the Elkins
Park Library: 610-649-0700, ext. 1402 or sbaldauf@philaymca.org. For volunteers who
are interested in one-on-one tutoring, 1 to 2 hours per week, please contact Susie
Baldauf. Free tutoring, training and materials are partially funded by the Pennsylvania
Department of Education

 

ITALIAN I

Planning a trip to Italy?  Want to learn Italian?  This course is for you!  No prior knowledge is required.  You’ll learn vocabulary, basic grammar, and useful phrases for shopping, dining, and getting around. Please bring $20 for materials the first night of class.

SPANISH II

Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I and will cover vocabulary on occupations, places,
more idiomatic expressions, more advanced weather expressions, some medical terms,
prepositions and negative expressions. Grammar covered will be on the irregular and
reflexive verb, past tenses (imperfect and preterite) and future tenses. Again, more cultural
customs, recipes and Spanish art will be discussed. The same text as Spanish IB will be used.

Please bring $5 to cover the cost of handouts.

FRENCH I

Whether you’ve forgotten everything you’ve learned in high school/college French or you are new to the language, you can learn in a fun and relaxed environment.  Begin to build vocabulary and to understand grammar through the use of illustrations and dialogue, such as describing what you do, discussing your travel plans, food and culture.  Come to the first class ready to speak French!  Please bring to the first class $22 for books and handouts.

CHINESE I

JAPANESE

This course will acquaint you with elementary modern spoken and written Japanese, providing
you with a foundation for further study. You will learn basic daily spoken Japanese, the fundamentals
of grammar, vocabulary and useful conversational expressions in real-life settings,
as well as reading and writing of Hiragana (the basic 46 characters of Japanese). Please purchase
Japanese for Busy People I: Revised Third Edition, publication date 1/2/2008, which is
available online for about $25. Additional materials will be provided by the instructor.

KOREAN I

Learn to read and speak Korean in just ten weeks.  Korean is a phonics-oriented language that is surprisingly easy to learn.  The basic Korean alphabet has only 14 consonants and 11 vowels. After a few classes, you will be able to read and understand a great deal of the writing in our area’s Korean markets.  In the later class sessions you will expand your vocabulary with an emphasis placed on conversation.  Korean heritage and culture will also be discussed. Please expect to spend $20-25 on materials.

SIGN LANGUAGE I

This introductory course in American Sign Language systems includes signed English American Sign Language and finger spelling. You will have the opportunity to practice both expressive and receptive sign language skills.  The cost of materials is about $55 for text book and videotapes, payable to the instructor the first night of class.

SIGN LANGUAGE II

Designed for those who already know the basics of sign language, this class will give students
the opportunity to advance their communication skills. Depending on class
