POETRY WORKSHOP

This workshop is open to all poets, novice and experienced. Though we will discuss a variety
of poems, the emphasis will be on reading and discussing each otherʼs work. There will be
discussions of venues for live readings as well as how to submit poems for publication. All students will be encouraged to submit poems to the CTAS literary magazine, The Tookany
Review
. We will be using one inexpensive textbook, Sleeping on the Wing, Kenneth Koch and
Kate Farrell, eds. (Vintage Books, 1982) available used from amazon.com, powells.com or
alibris.com. Please bring the textbook and one of your own poems to the first class.

CREATIVE WRITING: FINDING YOUR VOICE
Whether you want to improve your communication skills, dust off an old story, or discover
your writing voice for the first time, this course will provide keys to being an
effective writer. The non-threatening, friendly atmosphere is based in teacher guidance
and peer encouragement. We'll use weekly in-class writing exercises, lively dialogue,
and revision to build confidence and skill. Depending on class interest, we may discuss: When
is a piece is finished? Where can I publish my work? Am I writing fiction or memoir? Readings
will be suggested to supplement class work. The final class will be a 'coffee house' where we'll
read and applaud each other's work. Please bring $3 to the first class for materials and fees.
