MUSIC, FILM AND THEATER

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE

So you haven’t played for the last twenty years?  It’s like riding a bicycle; you never forget.  Dust off that old instrument (or new one) and get back into the swing of things.  The only requirements are that you play an orchestral instrument: woodwind, brass, percussion or string (especially needed); be able to read music; have patience with yourself and possess a good sense of humor.  Tackle some of the old classics, marches and current pop and show music.  The course ends with a mini-concert for family, friends and the community on May 12.

CLAWHAMMER BANJO

Learn to play that banjo the way the oldtimers did.  Clawhammer banjo styles extend back to the mid-1800’s.  The class will start by concentrating on the basic clawhammer strum.  We will build on the basic strum by adding in hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides and double thumb and drop-thumb techniques.  The result of building these simple techniques on top of one another is a beautiful and complex banjo sound that harks back to the U.S. Civil War days and the southern mountain banjo sounds.  Bring your banjo and be ready to play.  It will be helpful to grow your strumming hand finger nails (index, middle, ring) for a month before the class.  A limited number of banjos can be rented. Call the school office at 215.887.1720; leave your name and phone number, and the teacher will contact you.
