Roberta Ball
Two poems
Buffet
She arrives hungry and eager
to sample new offerings
How disappointing
The wine is thin
The assortment is ordinary
Certainly her appetite
deserves better
Her plate remains empty
as she quietly leaves with
a bitter taste in her mouth
from her last meal at home
The Dunes
The dunes are my barrier to the bountiful sea
Their sandy mounds covered with brush
Have grown thick and tall with time
They keep the ebb and flow of the tides
at a safe distance
Protecting me from the whims of nature
The beach is peaceful
The sea sparkles in the summer sun
Frisky waves frolic below the horizon
moving forward to caress the shore
I am content
The dunes stand steadfast waiting
Without warning blue skies turn gray
Rumbling dark clouds fill the air
with electricity
The sea is charged with energy
As bursts of pounding rain
Brings it to unleash its power and fury
The raging storm is long overdue
The beach is forced to yield
The dunes are flattened and denuded
No longer protected, I am bare
To once again enjoy the excitement of the sea
