Two poems
Someone’s Daughter
You were always the bringer.
You brought the fun.
You brought the food.
You brought the adventure.
You brought the uncertainty.
You brought the fear.
You brought the pain.
Your screams brought neighbors.
Your approval brought joy.
You were the unstable sun
Of our family.
We circled about you,
Afraid to get too close,
Returning to the same place
Over and over and over
Again.
How sad it must have been for you.
Someone’s daughter,
Who dreamed of love, marriage, children.
It is still heartbreaking for me.
You were the bringer.
You brought me forth.
You brought me up.
You brought the very best you had.
And I brought no help.
No one did.
We all just held onto whatever life preserver
We had made for ourselves
And watched you drown,
Over and over and over
Again.
