One
poem
Chasing Fireflies at Night
Chasing fireflies at night ended summer days.
Blinking yellow lights dot the backyard and illuminate the darkness
While my cousins and I catch them,
Like little boxers working a bag we grab for hovering lights.
Sun like incandescent dimples on black
They flicker to elude us.
Captured, placed into a jar.
Feast on smooth green grass and yellow dandelions.
Place the jar near at bedtime, watch them blink as sleep arrives.
A bit older, taking lovers on moonlight strolls in the open fields
We’d sit in moist dew covered grass, exchange affection
And enjoy the soft serenade of lights that would appear and disappear
in the dark.
Much older, I’m in attendance in my backyard.
Now wondering, how random do they fly?
A river flowing smoothly around its obstacles,
They move with no resistance, move with the night.
No destination or direction.
I admire their way; they seem to just be, if only for the brevity of
summer.
