AN UNUSUAL DAY OF SEEING AND HEARING AND LUNCHING AT A CIN-SATIONAL RESTAURANT

We start the day at the Design Center at Philadelphia University. The textile collection dates back to the 4th century A.D. and includes Pre-Columbian fragments, 18th century church vestments, 19th and 20th century clothing, and hundreds of samples of American manufactured textiles. We will be fortunate to see a special showing by innovative Baltimore textile artist, Susie Brandt. Lunch will be at Cin-Cin in Chestnut Hill, an award-winning Asian restaurant with a French flair. After lunch, it is on to the beautiful campus of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), hidden away in Elkins Park. PCO, one of the most prestigious optometry schools in the country, also has a distinguished School of Audiology. Dr. Harry Kaplan, Assistant Professor of Optometry, will guide us through this modern educational facility. In addition to learning about the latest technology in the field, we will also find out what is covered by Medicare in the seeing and hearing world. THE LITTLE STREET OF CLUBS

Camac Street – history lives along this street. This wood block street, installed about 1900 so as to be quieter under horses’ hooves, is the only wooden street left in Philadelphia. We will visit three professional clubs located on Camac Street.

bulletThe Philadelphia Sketch Club is one of the oldest art clubs in the country, with a busy schedule of workshops and exhibitions. Founded in 1860, it was strictly a men’s club until 1990, when women were admitted.
bulletThe Plastic Club – (“plastic” meaning “art in a fluid state”) was founded in 1897 by professional women artists. At that time no art organization in the city admitted women. They Club admitted men about 1990! We will have lunch here.
bulletThe Franklin Inn, with its extensive art collection, was founded by S. Weir Mitchell as a literary society. It is the home of works of literary giants, among them Owen Wister, author of The Virginian.

This will be a very special day - an unusual opportunity to observe what is behind the doors of the historic buildings along the “Little Street of Clubs.”
